JWT Canada is thrilled to announce that Mark Phillips, Director, Business Development, and Alex Newman, Art Director, have been chosen by Marketing Magazine as Top 30 Under 30 recipients for 2014.
Mark re-joined JWT in June of 2013, just as the milestone pitch for Air Canada was on the horizon. He performed a pivotal role in helping to win the high profile account and, at the same time, was selected by JWT’s internal High Potential Employee program, consisting of only 50 individuals from JWT’s worldwide network.
“This is my second tour of duty at JWT. With the transformation the agency was on the cusp of, it was a perfect time to return. The momentum we've achieved since has been amazing,” says Mark. "This recognition is equally a testament to the great team at JWT Canada. To share this honour with Alex is pretty special. He's a phenomenal creative talent.” When Mark is not helping JWT win new clients, he's travelling with his wife, Talia, or enjoying his Upper Beach neighbourhood with their dog, Bentley.
After winning a Cannes Young Lion in 2011, Alex and his creative partner Patrice Pollack were hired by JWT New York. Two years later the team moved to JWT Toronto and began to play an important creative role on the Air Canada business, spearheading their new digital launch and helping to create their new branding campaign for ‘Your World Awaits’.
“It’s rare to have the opportunity to reinvent a brand but in the case of Air Canada, I could really let loose and spread my wings creatively,” says Alex. “Advertising is fiercely competitive, and to have not one, but two winners from JWT Canada really sends a message out to the industry – something good is happening here,” says Alex. There are no depths or heights he won’t explore: Alex is also an avid scuba diver and amateur astrophotographer.
The wins come off a momentous year at JWT where the industry’s top young talent seems to be migrating, and proliferating. In April, four JWT teams were chosen as semi-finalists in the Globe and Mail’s Cannes Young Lions contest, and in September, Karen Judge, a Junior Strategic Planner at JWT Canada, was one of seven global winners (and the only woman) chosen for the JWT Global Commodore Challenge for creating a groundbreaking entrepreneurial idea. JWT was also recently shortlisted for Strategy Online’s Agency and Digital Agency of the Year.
“Mark and Alex’s Thirty Under Thirty recognition is a testament to JWT’s vibrant, passionate and energized culture,” says Susan Kim-Kirkland, President and CEO of JWT Canada. “They are both unstoppable change agents and, along with many others here, represent the present and future of JWT.”
JWT looks to celebrate a milestone 150 years of pioneering in advertising this December. Clearly the agency’s talent has had something to do with that longevity.
