“J. Walter Thompson is very proud of Alex and this incredible accomplishment. Having the ability to be so open and honest is truly courageous and allowed the reader to experience their evolving family dynamic, first hand,” said Susan Kim-Kirkland, president and CEO, J. Walter Thompson Canada. “Alex has grown immensely over the last four years, both professionally and personally, and we look forward to his continued success.”
After winning a gold medal in the Cannes Young Lions Competition in 2011, Alex joined J. Walter Thompson as an art director. Since then, Alex has been working on award winning business like PFLAG and Air Canada becoming recognized in numerous award shows. In 2014, Marketing Magazine named Alex one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30.
As a side project for nearly two years, Alex and his father worked to create a memoir that discussed what it meant to be a modern man. The book follows the struggles of a successful father and a misunderstood son as they try to connect and understand each other through chapters written in isolation – then shared.
“When we first started writing, I thought I knew my father. A driven man in a fast paced career – a hero parachuting in to save the day, but what I discovered was a man that had experienced insecurities and failures throughout his life,” said Alex Newman, art director, J. Walter Thompson Canada. “Although coming out plays a big role in our story, what we’ve written about are the fundamentals of a father-son relationship and how we navigated the complexities of masculinity to make ourselves better men.”
